Description

Sozopol

Sozopol is one of the oldest cities in Bulgaria.

The city was founded in the 7th century B.C. by Greek settlers and was for a long time a trading and maritime centre in the following centuries and became one of the largest and richest Greek colonies in the Black Sea region.
The charming Sozopol, formerly known as Apollonia, can actually be divided into a modern and an ancient part. Old Sozopol, built against a hill that flows into a peninsula, is full of charming old wooden houses flanking the meandering cobbled streets.

Wander around to enjoy the picturesque shops and galleries, or just sit on one of the terraces and gaze out to sea to see one of the many dolphins that love to play in the endless rolling waves around this romantic peninsula.
On the southeast side of the centre, you can still see the old ramparts and towers that used to protect the old harbour. Now you can stroll along this beautiful promenade along with the fortress and the southern city walls.
Although it is not as busy as Nesebâr, it is becoming increasingly popular with international visitors. There is also a lively cultural scene, with plenty of free concerts and other events during the summer.

You don't need much imagination to feel like you are walking in a beach town in Greece, ... only significantly cleaner and surprisingly cheaper, affordable luxury. Especially the small harbour with its many blue fishing boats and adjoining fish restaurants is the place to be.
This beautiful old town with its enchanting view of the sea is through its traces of many inherited cultures a real museum city.
