Description
Sliven, Bulgaria's eighth-largest city in population, is located in the province of Sliven about 100 km west of the Black Sea coast.
Here you will experience the daily life of Bulgarians in a rural town. It is a small, flat town and most places are easily accessible on foot. The city centre is closed to cars and has beautiful tree-lined pedestrian boulevards, with many cosy cafes and shops. The many trees and flowers give the city the scent of late spring.
Situated under massive rocky mountains Sinite Kamani, Sliven is known as one of the windiest cities in Bulgaria.
A much-visited attraction is the open-air market, it is one of the few in Bulgaria and is open daily except Sundays, although many times local farmers will offer local products then also.
At this large open-air market, you will find and smell the local specialities, fruit, herbs and vegetables, with a cosy colourful crowd.
The Old Elm Tree in the city centre is more than 1000 years old. It is a remnant of the Great Bulgarian Forest that stretched in history from the Rhodopi Mountains to the Black Sea.
The city is also known for its various mineral baths, which are still used to treat various ailments or simply for your well-deserved relaxation.
